Hashmi not produced in court

LAHORE, April 28: Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi was not produced on Wednesday in the city's accountability court No 2, which adjourned the hearing of a reference against him till May 10.

The court directed the superintendent of the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, to ensure that the PML-N acting president was produced in court on the next day of hearing of the reference that charges him with corruption.

According to the reference, Mr Hashmi had amassed assets disproportionate to known sources of his income during the period he had been a member of the federal cabinet and the National Assembly since 1985.

He is now serving 23-year imprisonment at Adiala Jail. He is accused by the National Accountability Bureau of purchasing property like a residential plot in Islamabad and a house in Multan, besides setting up industries, by corrupt practices. His counsel, advocate Manzoor Ahmad Malik, remained in court waiting for his appearance till last minute.

DAG SUMMONED: The high court directed a deputy attorney-general to explain on Thursday why Hamza Shahbaz was not being allowed to go abroad. Hamza, son of former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, filed a fresh application submitting that the interior secretary had rejected his request for permission to leave for London and Saudi Arabia as his name was on the exit control list.

The court had disposed of Hamza's earlier application by sending it to the interior secretary with a direction that a decision should be taken on his request to leave Pakistan in three weeks. In his fresh application, he submitted that his request was not granted and the ministry had advanced no justification for the decision.
