KARACHI, May 19: Chalking has reappeared on the walls of buildings, housing complexes and bungalows in many parts of the city during the last few weeks, creating multi-faceted problems.

After announcement of strict rules against chalking on the walls a couple of years ago and their firm implemen-tation at that time by relevant authorities, the phenomenon had subsided to quite an extent.

However, during the last few weeks, chalking has resurfaced in a big way at thoroughfares such as M.A. Jinnah Road, Jehangir Road and Sharea Pakistan, besides other main roads.

Apart from monetary losses to those who have their walls cleaned and re-painted, it also causes incalculable psychological distress.

A more severe outcome of the matter is the resurgence of hateful sentiment among various people, created by these chalkings.

Though chalking was removed from a portion of the area near Nishtar Park following some public programmes recently, it was not removed from other parts on the same road and apparently no steps were taken to prevent or discourage its reappearance in accordance with the relevant law.—APP
