PESHAWAR, May 19: Stormy winds lashed Peshawar valley and other parts of the Frontier province and the adjacent tribal areas, causing power failure in the provincial capital.

The winds, blowing at a speed of 47 knots an hour — recorded at mid night — lashed tribal areas, northern and southern parts of the province, according to local Met office.

The wind-storm caused severe dust pollution in the air and uprooted trees and sign boards. The Peshawarites have been experiencing heatwave for the last two days and the speedy gusty winds further added to their miseries, confining people to their homes.

Many parts of Peshawar plunged into darkness due to disturbance in power supply. A spokesman of Peshawar Electric Supply Company told Dawn that the company had called out its surplus staff to cope with the situation in the city, arising out of continuous wind storm. “Only in Hayatabad town the company has received over 370 complaints of power failure in 24-hour”, the spokesman said that repair work was still in progress in many parts of the city.

In Bashir Abad locality trees fell on 11,000 kv main transmission line on Saturday afternoon which resulted in power failure for more than three hours. Wapda complaint office reported that the storm disturbed power supply from Rahatabad, Circle Road, Shami Road and Jehgra feeders that was restored late night.

However, power supply from Metra and Kochian feeders have yet to restore and repair work was still in progress, the concerned official said.
