KARACHI, March 19: Road infrastructure in Lyari has reached at the verge of collapse, as the town administration is still awaiting development funds from city and provincial governments.

Despite the claims of both governments for paying special attention to Lyari, the oldest area in the city having 1.6 million population, the town has also been neglected in the Rs29 billion Tameer-i-Karachi Programme.

The Lyari Town administration has already submitted its report to the city government regarding the proposed development projects including carpeting and repairing of roads and streets, which would estimated to cost Rs360 million.

However, the city government's department concerned has not initiated a single project in Lyari so far though several projects have been started in other parts of the city under Tameer-i-Karachi Programme and Annual Development Programme.

It is pertinent to mention here that almost all the roads and streets in the entire town are in poor conditions. Among such roads, Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road is the one, where digging work had been started about four years back but later the contractor stopped it without stating any reason.

Meeranaka Road, connecting Lyari and Site towns, is also presenting a ruined picture as the potholes developed in the road for quite some time have not been filled so far.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Road connecting Lyari Town with Saddar Town, which is the busiest road in the town, is no more different from other roads. Moreover, Mirza Adam Khan Road is also in dilapidated conditions. -PPI
