BAHAWALPUR, March 18: Tahir Bashir Cheema, the younger brother of district Nazim Tariq Cheema, resigned on Thursday from the office of Chishtian tehsil office to contest the bypolls from NA-190 (Chishtian), Bahawalnagar III.
It was learnt that he had forwarded his resignation to the government through Bahawalnagar district Nazim Ali Akbar Waince. It may be mentioned that Mr Tahir Cheema was also among the PPP deserters along with other two MPAs and seven tehsil Nazims. The resignation was necessitated because the scrutiny of nomination papers of the candidates on NA-190 began on Thursday in Chishtian.
ELECTED: At least 25 candidates were declared elected unopposed on Thursday in bypolls on vacant seats of union councils in the Bahawalpur district.
It was learnt that those elected unopposed included two Nazims of UCs 68 and 88 (Ahmedpur tehsil), eight women general councillors, seven each workers, peasants (women) and minority and one Muslim general councillor.
In Rahim Yar Khan district, so far 13 candidates were declared elected unopposed. They are: two UC Nazims, six workers and peasants (women), three minorities and two Muslim general councillors (women).
In Bahawalnagar district, around 59 candidates were declared elected unopposed, including four UC Nazims, 23 peasants and workers (women), 15 women Muslim general councillors and 14 minorities.
WHEAT VARIETIES: At least four new wheat varieties have been evolved and introduced with the approval of the government. This was stated by the Bahawalpur regional agriculture research station director while briefing a 30-member team of agriculture experts here on Thursday.
He said that the four new varieties were Bahawalpur-2000, Panjnad-1, Minthar-3 and Bahawalpur Raia. He said the research work on a number of wheat varieties was in progress at the research station.
Team head Dr Nafees Ahmed Kasana said the purpose of team's visit was to collect information about the problems being faced by the farming community and submit its report to the federal government for solving these problems.
