KARACHI, March 17: Justice Zawwar Hussain Jaffery of the Sindh High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Advocate General Sindh, Home Secretary and IGP Sindh for March 26, 2004 while hearing a constitutional petition filed by Ms Arshia Bano, mother of Shahid Alam alias Guddu Bihari , the former Nazim of Orangi Town.

The petitioner moved the court for its orders to inquire from the respondents about the number of cases pending against her son, accused and arrested in an unspecified number of cases.

The petitioner maintained that her son was booked by the Orangi Town Extension police in five cases which were originally registered against unidentified persons. Besides, three cases of corruption were registered.

The petitioner has maintained that her son had been implicated in blind FIRs because of enmity harboured by people in the corridors of power. She, through her counsel, complained she had been running from pillar to post to get him freed from false cases.

The bench, after hearing initial arguments, issued pre-admission notices to the respondents for March 26. The same bench dismissed a bail application filed by one, Mukhtiar Ahmed, accused of causing injuries to four person on a marriage dispute.

According to the prosecution, the Mukhtiar Ahmed, along with the co-accused Omar Khattab, Noor Khattab and Gul Aftab had attacked and injured Rahim Gul, Azizul Haq and Nazir Gul in the jurisdiction of Quaidabad police station with knives and toka on Nov 5, 2003. Akhtar Rehana, state counsel, opposed the bail application filed by the main accused through his counsel Saleem Memon. -APP
