Courier used for drug pushing

Published March 10, 2004

LAHORE, March 9: Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) commander Brig Ashfaqur Rashid said on Tuesday that certain courier services were misused for drug trafficking in the past, and claimed to have smashed one such network in Germany recently.

Mr Khan said a drug baron booked a parcel through a courier service a few months back which was destined for Germany from Muridke. He said on suspicion, the courier company requested the ANF to examine the parcel. And the ANF people found a sizable quantity of contraband concealed in decoration pieces and other items.

Mr Khan said the ANF made attempts to track down the sender, but to no avail as the sender had given a wrong address. However, the ANF decided to send the parcel at the given address in Germany after removing heroin from it, and informed the German police subsequently. The German authorities pursued the recipient of the parcel who was of Pakistani origin and settled there since long.

The official did not disclose the name of the drug baron, and said he was finally arrested and investigated by the German authorities which extracted the name of the trafficker here.

He said senior German officials came to Lahore with valuable information after which the entire network was busted. He said the ANF warned the courier services to be careful and urged them to remain in touch with the agency whereafter not a single case had been reported so far. -APP
