SUKKUR, March 3: The peasants held a protest demonstration here on Wednesday against a Sindh government move to allot 3,000 acres of farmland in Deh Loli, Salehpat taluka, to the Military Families' Rehabilitation Organization (MFRO).

They were led by People's Party Parliamentarians MPA Nasrullah Baloch. The peasants alleged that the government had closed their water channel to turn their land barren so that it could be handed over to the MFRO without any resistance by them.

The protesters alleged that it was being done on the behest of an influential person who was close to Sindh Chief Minister Ali Mohammad Mahar. The peasants threatened that they would resist any move to deprive them of their land, by staging protest demonstrations and observing a hunger strike.

PPP-SB: Pakistan People's Party (Shaheed Bhutto) activists held another protest demonstration outside the press club in support of the Salehpat peasants. They demanded that the government should drop the idea of "snatching" land from the peasants and threatened that protest would be continued otherwise.

TELEMETRY SYSTEM: Power supply to telemetry system installed at the Sukkur Barrage has been disconnected for the last four days.

Irrigation sources said that the system had not been handed over to their department therefore disconnection of power supply to it or non-payment of its electricity bill did not concern them.

They further said that telemetry system at Sukkur Barrage was not properly working and had not yet been connected with barrages and head-works of Punjab. They said that the system belonged to Wapda at present and when it would be handed over to the irrigation department, they would take the charge of it after thoroughly checking it.

Purpose of installing telemetry systems at barrages and head-works of canals in the country is to record exact water flow at each place in order to curb water theft.
