GUJRANWALA, March 1: A trader was kidnapped for ransom by some unidentified people here on Monday. Haji Mohammad Asif was on his way home by a motorcycle when some car-riders, including a woman, intercepted him near the Satellite Town market. They bundled him into their car and fled. Later, the kidnappers phoned his family from Peshawar and demanded Rs1 million as ransom for his release.

Meanwhile, the Anjuman Tajran has demanded that the trader should be recovered at the earliest. They threatened that they would go on strike if he was not recovered within 24 hours.

RECORD SEIZED: The Anti-Corruption Establishment on Monday took into possession the record of the Rajkot union council to hold an inquiry into embezzlement of funds by its Nazim and other members.

Reports said some members of the Rajkot union council, including the opposition, lodged a complaint with the ACE and the district Nazim that the UC Nazim got completed many uplift projects besides purchasing furniture for his office without approval of the house. They demanded that the entire record of the union council should be taken into custody before initiating an inquiry. The district Nazim forwarded their memorandum to the ACE for an action.

BODIES HANDED OVER: The bodies of a woman and her husband, who were shot dead by the former's brothers over an agricultural land dispute at Kot Ladha, were handed over to the heirs by the DHQ Hospital administration here on Monday.

According to reports, Asima Rani eloped with her lover Asghar Rehmani of Sheikhupura few months ago and they contracted court marriage. On the day of occurrence she came to her parents along with here husband and demanded her share from an agricultural land and other property.

Younis, a brother of the woman, became infuriated when her deceased husband fought with his in-laws and shot the couple dead. The deceased Asghar had killed his brother Akram and fractured both legs of his father some few years ago when they forbade him from his wrongdoings. Thereafter, he went missing and police declared him proclaimed offender.

SUICIDE: A man committed suicide by taking poisonous pills in Garjakh here on Monday. Imran took poison following a quarrel with his parents over pocket money. He died on the spot.

BURNT: A gypsy woman, Surraya Bibi, and her daughter, Sughran (10), sustained burn injures when their cottage caught fire in Lambanwali Cantonment on Monday. The injured were taken to the local DHQ Hospital in critical condition.
