UK warns of terror attack in S. Arabia

Published February 18, 2004

RIYADH, Feb 17: Terrorists could be in the final stages of planning an attack on Saudi Arabia, the British Foreign Office has said in a fresh warning. Similar warnings were issued last year before the May 12 and Nov 9 bombings in Riyadh.

The Saudi government issued a similar warning last Friday about an imminent threat of a car bomb attack. An announcement on Saudi TV, citing Ministry of Interior sources said: According to very reliable sources there is an imminent threat of a car packed with explosives ready to be used in a terrorist act."

Reports here indicate that security forces have by now received more than 2,000 calls claiming to have spotted the car and are believed to be working on the tips received so far. Several British Airways flights to Riyadh have been cancelled owing to security considerations.
