Unicef, WHO to survey quake-hit areas

PESHAWAR, Feb 17: A two-member WHO mission will undertake a two-day visit of the earthquake-affected areas of Mansehra and Battagram districts on Wednesday to assess the damage caused by theSaturday earthquake.

"WHO and Unicef would jointly carry out relief activities in the earthquake-hit areas. We have already obtained information regardinghuman losses from the offices of district coordination officers (DCOs) and district police officers (DPOs).

The mission will visit the areas to ascertain losses and pave the way for assistance," WHO's emergency medical officer, Dr Quaid Saeed told Dawn here on Tuesday.

The mission will visit Mansehra district on Wednesday and Battagram on Thursday to carry out survey for the help needed. Citing the report of the district police officer of Mansehra district, he said that some 109 houses had been collapsed, while 857 were partially damaged in Balakot, Kaghan, Shinkiari and Battal areas of Mansehra district.

Five persons, including, four children and one women died in the same areas, whereas eight women, as many number of men and nine children sustained injuries.

Likewise, 14 persons (all men) died and one child was injured in Shamlai, Ganter and Banna/Allai areas of Battagram district and one building had been collapsed. Dr Quaid said that most of the houses in Battagram were partially damaged and almost all the link roads are blocked in tehsil Allai due to land sliding.

The Unicef has so far sent 10 tents, 48 blankets, soap and water purification tablets, while the Pakistan Red Crescent Society had dispatched 34 tents, 300 blankets, 20 sleeping bags, 154 kerosene lamps and 50 kitchen sets for onwards distribution among the affected families.

According to WHO's official, the mission will acquire first hand information about the damages caused by the earthquake and would later decided about the healthcare assistance to the victims.
