ISLAMABAD, Feb 13: The Higher Education Commission (HEC), with the assistance of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), has initiated a plan to train scientists and engineers through educational and training programmes to meet high-tech human resource requirement for the nation.

This was stated by HEC chairman Dr Attaur Rehman, while speaking as chief guest at a ceremony held here to award merit certificates to eight talented young scientists.

These scientists had represented Pakistan in the 53rd Meeting of Noble Laureates in Lindua, Germany, in 2003. "Most rewarding investment is spending on education and training in various knowledge disciplines, as knowledge is not only the engine of economic growth, but also a source of social uplift, bringing about moderation and tolerance," Dr Ata said.

Besides producing 1,500 PhDs every year through its indigenous programme, the Higher Education Commission will also send 8,00 scientists and engineers abroad for higher education in near future, he said.

"Rapid growth of knowledge will be facilitated by provision of digital libraries and inter university linkage through internet," he said. In his presidential speech, PAEC chairman Parvez Butt said the commission actively participated in joint ventures with international scientific organizations.
