MIRPURKHAS: Water supply demanded

Published February 12, 2004

MIRPURKHAS, Feb 11: Hundreds of abadgars of Samaro distry area staged a demonstration on the Mirpurkhas Road near Khipro on Tuesday to protest against lack of water supply.

The growers, led by Haji Dhani Gaho, Jan Mohammad, Mohammad Khan Mari, Mohammad Hashim and Piaro Khan Shar also staged a sit-in, suspending traffic.

The leaders of the protesters alleged that irrigation officials were deliberately not supplying water to the Samaro distry, fed by the Khipro Canal. They said acute water shortage has been created in the area and the villagers were getting drinking water through hand-pumps.

They said their crops of wheat, sugarcane, onion and vegetables had been damaged due to non-availability of water. Khipro Taluka Nazim Khuda Bux Dars and Town Police Officer Syed Amir Abbas reached the spot and assured the growers that the water supply would be resumed within two days.
