BAHAWALPUR, Jan 26: The divisional transport federation at its meeting held here on Monday demanded the provincial transport authority to immediately increase transport fares on inter-city routes, otherwise they would launch a protest drive.

The meeting, which was chaired by federation president Chaudhry Sohail Ashraf Warraich, expressed its concern over frequent increase in petroleum product prices by the government. This, they said, laid burden on the transporters plying vehicles on inter-city route. Besides, he said transport fares had already been enhanced in Sindh province, but the Punjab government had yet to consider their demand.

The federation members dispersed after resolving that they would observe strike if the government didn't announce proportionate raise in transport fares.

ELECTRIFICATION: At least 94 schemes of village electrification, requiring over Rs500 million, will be carried out in the district. This was revealed at a meeting presided over by District Nazim Tariq Cheema here on Monday. Work on 32 schemes has already been started.

Meanwhile, the district development committee at its meeting, chaired by DCO Imran Ahmad, reviewed the progress of Tameer-i-Punjab uplift projects funded from the MPAs' grant. The meeting approved the establishment of a higher secondary school (Rs1.7 million) at Sammasatta and Jhangiwala school (Rs2.8 million).
