HYDERABAD, Jan 23: Activists of People's Party-SB observed a token hunger strike outside the press club on Friday to protest against the murder of party leaders, Ali Sonaro and Abdul Samad in Karachi.

Speaking on the occasion, district chief organizer of the party Pir Ghulam Nabi Sarhandi, Zahid Jokhio, Peeral Majeedano, Tufail Memon and others said Ali Sonaro and Samad were killed under a planned conspiracy.

They said the police had so far failed to arrest the culprits. They said when the life of an influential person was threatened, the police was quick to move into action but when an innocent person was killed the murderers were seldom arrested.

They said there were two laws in the country - one for the rich and the other for the poor. They warned that lawlessness always leads to rebellion. They said the government should not take the peaceful protest by the followers of Murtaza Bhutto lightly and warned that the charged workers of the party could not be held in check for a long period.

HARIS: A large number of liberated haris under the banner of Azad Hari Union, staged a protest sit-in outside the press club on Friday against the kidnapping of two peasants, Sohro Oodh and Malook Oodh.

Talking to newsmen the union general secretary Ahmed Dars alleged that the two haris were held hostage by feudal lord Ghulam Qadir Mari in Sanghar and Zubair Sehto in Umerkot.

They alleged the kidnapped haris were tortured. They demanded of the administration of Sanghar and Mirpurkhas districts to secure the release of hostages.

SPSF: Leaders of the Sindh People's Students Federation have condemned the murderous attack on the SPSF leader Asif Pathan at the Liaquat Medical University on Thursday.

In a joint statement on Friday, the provincial general secretary of the federation Aajiz Dhamrah, Dr Irfan Jamali, Awais Ali Shah, Mir Abdur Razzaq Turab and others said the attack on the life of Asif Pathan was an act of open terrorism and added that students were unsafe even in the educational institutions.

They said instead of resolving the problems of the students the university administration was victimizing them. They warned if the assailant of Asif Pathan were not arrested, the federation would launch a protest movement against the university administration. The students also held a protest demonstration at the campus on Friday.

HDA EMPLOYEES: The Hyderabad Development Authority Employees Union has strongly protested against the non-payment of salaries and overtime to the HDA employees and warned of serious consequences if the salaries were not disbursed immediately.

In a statement on Thursday, the union president, Khameso Jatoi and general secretary Behram Chang said the workers of planning and development department had not received their salaries for the last two months while WASA employees had not been paid their salaries for Dec 2003 and Eidul Fitr overtime.
