New Delhi tests Akash missile

Published January 14, 2004

NEW DELHI, Jan 13: India tested a medium-range surface-to-air missile, Akash, on Tuesday in the eastern state of Orissa, officials said.

The test was successful and "a major milestone in the country's integrated guided missile development programme", a defence official at the Integrated Testing Range in Chandipur told the UNI news agency.

The indigenously-built, multi-target missile has a range of about 25 kilometres. Akash is a 650-kilogram missile with a capacity to carry a 50-kilogram payload. It was last tested in June 2003.-dpa
