KABUL, Jan 9: An explosive device was placed outside a UN building in Mazar-i-Sharif but discovered before it could cause any damage, an NGO official said on Friday.

A spokesman for the Afghanistan Non-Governmental Organisation confirmed that UN staff found an improvised explosive device on Thursday evening some 25 metres away from the entrance to the main UN building in the city.

Police were called to the scene and the device was detonated without causing any damage or injuries. Aid workers have increasingly been the targets of attacks by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.-AFP
