KARACHI, Jan 31: Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister Sharmila Farooqui on Saturday presented a comprehensive report on the issues of the Sabzi Mandi, including the breakdown of law and order in the market, to Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza.

The report, which carries details of her visits to the Sabzi Mandi on the Super Highway and talks with members of its joint action committee as part of her efforts to end traders’ protest, was presented to the home minister during a meeting at his office.

It is said to contain suggestions for the resolution of the issues plaguing the Sabzi Mandi of late.

Ms Farooqui recommended the market committee’s restoration to resolve the issues of fee collection and establishment of a police station. She also recommended in the report that a Rangers picket be set up at the market.

Dr Mirza reviewed the report and said that substantial steps had been taken for restoration of peace and resumption of business activities at the Sabzi Mandi.

He agreed that a Rangers picket would be set up at the market to maintain law and order. He assured the adviser that a police station would be established. However, he said that steps would be taken only after fulfilling all legal formalities in this regard.

Meanwhile, Sharmila Farooqui, who is also chairperson of the national peace committee for inter-religious harmony, announced formation of a core committee comprising women representatives of different sects and religions.

She said: “It’s the need of hour that we put aside all differences and get united for the peace and security of the country.” She said it was the responsibility of people of different religions and sects that they forge unity and resolve their issues for the country’s development.

She asked the Karachi chapter’s president of the National Peace Committee to select one woman from each religion and sect who could highlight the issues.

She said every possible step would be taken to resolve the issues being faced by people belonging to different sects and religions in order to strengthen inter-religious harmony. She also directed that seminars and workshops be held in this regard.—PPI
