KARACHI, Jan 31: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for killing the husband of his wife’s younger sister in Landhi, police said.
The suspect, Sagheer, son of Ameer Hasan, allegedly kidnapped the 23-year-old victim, Zeeshan, son of Mohammed Sharif, for ransom on Friday evening.
The Awami Colony police said the suspect, a resident of Landhi 5 ½, demanded a ransom of Rs2.5 million from the victim’s father, a meat-seller, for his son’s release, although he had already shot dead the victim, who has a one-year-old girl.
They said the suspect abandoned the victim’s motorcycle at a desolate place in the Sharafi Goth police area and dumped the body in a big tool box placed near his home.
The police said the suspect called the victim’s father at around 3am and demanded the ransom and told him that he could find his son’s motorbike somewhere in Sharafi Goth.
They said the suspect, who runs a videogame shop in Korangi, went with the victim’s father in search of the motorcycle.
The police said Sagheer, married for five years to the elder sister of the victim’s wife, became a suspect when he led the victim’s father to the motorbike.
They said the victim’s father lodged a case (FIR 50/2009) of kidnapping of his son for ransom against Sagheer and his two unknown accomplices under sections 365-A and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The police said the suspect was arrested and during preliminary interrogation he broke down to admit that he had killed the victim.
The suspect told the police that he had called the victim at his home where they consumed liquor. He said he shot a bullet in the victim’s face when he became drunk.
They said the police at around 6pm found the victim’s body on a lead given by the suspect.
The police also recovered the pistol the suspect had allegedly used to shoot the victim. The police said a spent bullet casing was also found in the suspect’s house.
The body was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim was shot a single bullet to his right cheek and it went through the skull.
Ex-army man shot dead
A 41-year-old man was shot dead in Moinabad No 1, a shantytown near Dawood Chowrangi in Landhi, at around 7pm.
The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination. Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section said the victim received six bullets from a close range.
The Sharafi Goth police said the victim, identified as Abdullah, son of Zarin Shah, was a retired army man, hailing from the NWFP.
They said the victim, father of three, was earlier a resident of Moinabad and his present resident was yet to be ascertained.
The police said they were trying to find the victim’s family.
They said the incident seemed to be motivated by a personal feud.
Killed on tracks
A seven-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a train near Baloch Colony.
The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where the victim was identified as Shazia, daughter of Shabbir, a resident of Baloch Colony.
The railway police said the victim’s relatives took away the body before they reached the hospital.
Besides, a young man was found crushed to death on the tracks near the Karzaz railway station.
The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where the victim remained unidentified.
Hospital sources said the victim, wearing grey shalwar-qamees, appeared in his mid-20s.
The railway police said the man was believed to have fallen from a moving train.
They said the body was kept in Edhi’s morgue for want of identification.
