ISLAMABAD, May 14: The federal cabinet is meeting here on Wednesday to discuss the prevailing law and order situation, and review the development activities of various ministries and divisions.

Sources said that the meeting, to be presided over by President Gen Pervez Musharraf and participated by all the four provincial governors and chief secretaries, would discuss measures to implement the recommendations put forward by various quarters to improve the law and order situation with special reference to the protection to foreigners in the country.

The National Security Council and a special committee held separate meetings last week to discuss law and order, specially the killing of 11 Frenchmen in Karachi in suicide bombing on May 8. Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider could not attend either of the meetings as he is on visit to the United States.

However, the sources said that the minister would brief the cabinet about the law and order situation and efforts made so far to apprehend the planners of the suicide bombing.

The government officials have not ruled out the possibility of involvement of a foreign hand besides Al Qaeda in the latest wave of violence in Karachi.

The sources said that the officials of intelligence agencies would also brief the participants about the growing clouds of war in the region.

A special envoy of President Bush, Christina Rocca, is currently visiting the region amid reports that there was a danger of war between India and Pakistan.

The purpose of her visit reportedly was to advise both the countries to exercise restraints by withdrawing troops from borders.

She is also scheduled to visit Pakistan to discuss regional situation with the authorities.
