PAARL (South Africa), Oct 25: Sachin Tendulkar and captain Saurav Ganguly piled up a world record opening stand in One-day Internationals of 258 as India crushed Kenya by 186 runs Wednesday (partly reported in Thursday’s edition).

The result guaranteed India’s place in Friday’s final of the one-day triangular series, in which they will meet hosts South Africa in Durban.

Kenya were unable to get anywhere near India’s 351 for three from their 50 overs, managing just 165 for five.

Kenya could hardly have been expected to mount a serious run chase in the face of an asking rate of seven an over but they at least started solidly through Kennedy Otieno (40) and Ravindhu Shah (24).

Shah was run out after a terrible mix up with Otieno which was punished by a fine pick up and throw from Reetinder Singh Sodhi.

When Otieno was fourth out courtesy of a stumping by stand-in wicket-keeper Rahul Dravid off the bowling of Yuvraj Singh, the game was effectively over as a contest.

Dravid, who looked tidy and accomplished in his unusual role behind the stumps, pulled off another stumping when Odoyo (12) gave Yuvraj the charge.

Hitesh Modi (31 not out) and Martin Suji (14 not out) batted out the 50 overs but never with any intention other than self preservation and Kenya’s survival through to the close with a modicum of dignity.
