KARACHI, Jan 5: National Bank made it two victories on the trot in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship after defeating PIA by a convincing margin of 112 runs at the NBP Sports Complex here on Monday.
Having outclassed Habib Bank in the first round at the same venue, National Bank bowled PIA for 208 in the second innings on the final day after the national carrier were set a tough target of 321.
Barring fighting knocks by skipper Faisal Iqbal (52) and Shoaib Khan (40), no other PIA batsman managed to play a long innings.
Left-arm paceman Wahab Riaz dismissed tailender Aamir Ali to finish with four for 42.
National Bank now top Group ‘A’ with 15 points from two matches after collecting six from this game.
Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) settled for three first-innings points after their game against Karachi Whites ended in a tame draw at the Quaid-i-Azam Park in Steel Township.
Meanwhile, in Group ‘B’, Sialkot cantered to an easy seven-wicket win over Karachi Blues at the National Stadium thanks to an unbroken partnership of 132 between Haris Sohail (63) and skipper Ayub Dogar (69).
Our Sports Reporter adds from Lahore: Despite sparkling centuries by openers Afaq Rahim and Inam-ul-Haq, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) were held to a draw by Lahore Shalimar in the weather-hit match at the LCCA Ground.
After Lahore Shalimar declared first innings at 376 for seven, the bankers made a wonderful start with Afaq (151 off 198 balls, 14 fours) and Inam (109 off 136 balls, nine fours) putting 257.
ZTBL were 344-7 in 74.1 overs when the umpires called off the match.
Fine bowling by Saadat Munir (4-20) and Ahmed Hayat (3-43) helped Faisalabad crush Hyderabad by an innings and 69 runs at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
Hyderabad, who had conceded a big first innings lead of 175, were all out in the second knock for 106 after resuming at 19-2.
Multan were in sight of victory against Quetta at the Multan Cricket Stadium with the hosts needing 154 on Tuesday’s last day. Left-arm pace bowler Nazar Hussain grabbed six for 54 as Multan were all out for 193 in reply to Quetta’s first-innings total of 210.
But Quetta failed to cash in on that advantage when they were bowled out for 137 in the second innings despite Naseem Khan’s 71.
