MANSEHRA, Jan 5: All unconstitutional actions taken on Nov 3, 2007, can be undone through a National Assembly resolution or an executive order, according to deposed chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Addressing the District Bar Association here on Monday after administering oath of office to its newly-elected office-bearers, he said: “Until the Nov 3 judiciary is restored, the country will continue to face economic, social, energy and other crisis. If the government wants to address these issues, it should undo the unconstitutional acts of Nov 3 through a resolution or an executive order.”

A deposed judge of the Peshawar High Court, Ijaz Afzal Khan, additional and sessions judge Zahid Mehmood Khan, president of the District Bar Association Shahjahan Khan Swati and secretary-general Qazi Tariq Zaheer also attended the meeting.

Highlighting the importance of an independent and impartial judicial system, Iftikhar Chaudhry said no country could survive without one.

Referring to judges’ reinstatement, he said he was hopeful that all deposed judges would be reinstated. “The lawyers’ movement is near achieving its mission.”
