HYDERABAD, May 13: Former employees of the SRTC observed a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Monday to protest against the nonpayment of their dues.

Talking to newsmen, the leaders of the Former Employees Action Committee said that Hyderabad District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman and EDO (finance) Abdul Qadir Mangi had promised that the employees would be paid their dues on May 13 but this promise had not been honoured.

A leader of the employees action committee, Haji Ghulam Mohammad Deepar, while talking to Dawn claimed that the funds had been released by the government and deposited in the treasury but the chairman of the SRTC was not issuing cheques to the employees.

Deepar said the former employees would stage a protest demonstration outside the Hyderabad Press Club on Tuesday against the nonpayment of their dues for the last three years.

THAR COAL: The newly formed “Thar Resource Centre” at a meeting held here on Sunday demanded that the coal mining in Thar should be done under the supervision of the Thar District Council.

It also demanded to constitute a five-member committee with its headquarter at Mithi to supervise the operation.

The meeting observed that the Tharis had the right over its coal resources and therefore the Thar district government should be made in charge of the mining operation.

It further demanded that steps should be taken to protect the environment of Thar and its wildlife and added that the hunting of the rare species of birds and animals should be banned.

Ilyas Thari presided over the meeting.

SHC: Sindh Hari Committee president Comrade Azhar Jatoi, in a statement issued here on Monday, alleged that due to the wrong policies of the Irsa, Sindh was being converted into a desert.

He appealed to the nationalists forces to launch a joint struggle against the greater Thal canal.

ARRESTS: In the on-going crack down against criminals, the Hyderabad region police have arrested eight absconders, one army deserter and seven criminals and recovered five pistols, one gun, one revolver, 14 live rounds and 14 cartridges from their possession.

The police have also arrested four persons under section 107/151 CrPC to prevent breach of peace.
