DERA GHAZI KHAN, Dec 31: A large number of people rendered homeless by ravaging hill torrents in Rajanpur district in the last five months are being insufficiently fed and hardly taken care of at the so-called relief camps, it is learnt.

Thirty-four mauzas of Rajanpur were hit by the recent hill torrent which devoured hundreds of homes besides wreaking havoc on crops and cattle.

Many victims this correspondent talked to complained that the district administration and others concerned had failed to provide relief to the affected people. More than 200 mauzas of the district suffered nature’s wrath in August last.

Hamal Lajwani, one of the victims, told Dawn that they had been given insufficient tents, food and medicines at the camps.

The Safdarabad relief camp has been set up along side the Indus Highway to create an impression that everything is going on well. But during a visit to the camp, this correspondent learnt through many affected people that they are facing shortage of tents, food and medicines. According to them, four tents have been given to 12 families.

Dera Ghazi Khan Commissioner Hasan Iqbal visited the camp the other day, but officials under him presented an all-is-well picture by ignoring the concerns of the victims. The commissioner, when contacted by Dawn, said the administration was making all-out efforts to facilitate the flood-hit people.

DCO Amin Chaudhry declined to comment on the complaints of insufficient arrangements at the ‘model’ relief camp.
