Rotation plan worsens water crisis

MIRPURKHAS, Oct 25: Water crisis has intensified in Mirpurkhas division with the decline of water level in the Nara Canal.

Many growers of the area have decided not to cultivate wheat and sugarcane crop while sowing of both the crops have been started in the division.

Report say that water discharge in Nara head was below 5,000 cusecs.

The irrigation authorities have resorted to rotation system as a result of which the growers are getting water for only one week in a month.

Due to this illogical rotation, over one hundred villages are deprived of drinking water in the command area of Nara Canal.

It is feared that during coming days situation might worsen and several water supply schemes of rural and urban areas will not receive drinking water.

Meanwhile, following the directives of Sindh High Court Sukkur bench, director Nara Canal has issued instructions to remove the pumping machines installed illegally at both banks of Nara Canal, from taluka Rohri, Saleh Pat and Nara.

Over 250 illegal pumping machines have been installed at both banks of Nara Canal in district Khairpur through which huge quantity of water has been stolen.

NAZIM: Taluka Nazim Mirpurkhas, Syed Inayat Ali Shah has expressed concern over the denial of invitation to the elected representatives to the public outreach programme of provincial secretary communication, secretary Zakat and Ushr, and director-general mineral development, held here on Wednesday, by the local administration .

Talking to this correspondent, he said that there were lot of problems regarding communication and building and Zakat and Ushr departments but the administration avoided the elected representatives’ presence so that they could not raise the public problems in the open kutchery.

He added that he was approaching higher authorities by sending letters in this regard.

On the other hand, a large number councillors of union council Mirwah, including Shahid Hussain Mughal, Heralal Hero, Rahim Ali, Noorjehan, and Sakina Bibi, have complained that Nazim UC Mirwah was ignoring them in the proceedings of UC Mirwah.

They demanded of the district Nazim Pir Shafqat Hussain Shah Jilani to take notice and bound the Nazim to have consultation with the councillors on the matters related to their constituency.

In a joint statement here on Thursday, they regretted that a development scheme of their area were not put before the councillors.

They asked the authorities to ensure the Nazim’s consultations with them for the development schemes, which would make the process democratic.
