HYDERABAD, Dec 24: Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza has said though the case of Oct 18 Karsaz blasts in Benazir Bhutto’s homecoming rally has lost relevance after her assassination on Dec 27, the UN investigators will, however, look into both the incidents.

Talking to journalists after unveiling a statue of Benazir Bhutto at Sindh Museum on Wednesday, the minister said that the case had been handed over to UN investigators and they had accepted the responsibility.

He said that since an attempt was made on her life and in the second attempt she was killed in Rawalpindi, the Oct 18 case had been clubbed together with Dec 27 case.“We have said since the day of murder that the UN investigators will conduct investigation into BB’s assassination. Now the case has been handed over to the world body. Therefore, when its investigation begins, the UN team will also look into the Oct 18 suicide bombings. Otherwise, no progress has been made on Oct 18 case,” he said.

To a question about an email sent by Ms Bhutto to her lawyer, Mark Siegel, before her death, the minister said “it’s not in police record but when investigation begins not only the email but statements of all important leaders of the country will be examined”.

He said that high alert had been declared in Sindh especially Larkana district where security had been beefed up for Dec 27 gathering. All roads leading to Larkana and Garhi Khuda Bux would be under surveillance round the clock with rangers patrolling the area, he said.

He said that he had not received any report about any possible subversive activity from any agency but he liked to be extra cautious in light of past experience that big gatherings were always an easy target of terrorist activities.

“Army can be called in to aid civil administration as per constitutional requirements. They are present at their stations and God forbids! if need be, army can be and will be called,” he said.

Obviously, President Asif Ali Zardari would be in Larkana to participate in the first death anniversary programme of his wife and beloved leader of people.

Earlier, Sindh Culture and Tourism Minister Sassui Palejo said that people would continue to shed tears over the murder of Benazir Bhutto who had always stood for the oppressed sections of the society.
