LANDI KOTAL, Dec 19: Two people were killed when two empty oil tankers returning from Afghanistan were attacked near the Michni checkpost on the Peshawar-Torkham Highway on Friday night.

According to official sources, the attack was apparently carried out by militants who have stepped up their activities in the Khyber Agency and Peshawar for stopping supplies to foreign troops in Afghanistan.

The tankers were returning from Afghanistan after unloading fuel for Nato forces. Their drivers, identified as Shabbir and Rehan of Walikhel area, were killed.

Wasif Khan, a brother of Shabbir, received serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital in Peshawar.

An official told Dawn that local people reported hearing the sound of a massive blast and believed the tankers had been hit by rocket-propelled grenades or by explosive devices.

Later, they came to know that the vehicles had been attacked with automatic weapons.

Two days ago, a convoy of trucks carrying goods for Nato troops, was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades causing injuries to a woman.

The militants have carried out a number of attacks on logistic terminals in Peshawar and so far torched over 200 vehicles, including military trucks and Humvees.
