UNITED NATIONS, Dec 17: United States would press Pakistan and other member states to “adhere completely” to the UN Security Council sanctions on Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) and other militant organisations, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Tuesday night.

“I know the Pakistani government to be a government that wants to deal in good faith with the world – it’s a new civilian government that is a legitimate government that wants very much to be respected in international politics...”, she told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York.

“(And), by the way, (the new Pakistani government) wants to deal with the terrorism problem, that is itself having dire consequences in Pakistan – I expect that there will be ... cooperation.”

The comments came when a correspondent drew attention of Ms Rice to a statement by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi that charitable arms of the Jamaatud Dawa would not be closed down.

Last week, the UN Security Council’s sanctions committee had imposed sanctions on JuD and four of its leaders for their alleged involvement in the Mumbai terrorist attack.

Pakistan followed up with a crackdown, which included arrests, freezing their assets and sealing their offices.

Asked whether Pakistani foreign minister’s reported statement amounted to be a violation of UN sanctions, Rice said that it was for Pakistan to figure it out how they are going to implement the Security Council sanctions.

“Pakistan is going to have to untangle the difficult circumstances the Jamaat offers – they are – because I understand there are so called charitable activities.

But we learned – the United States learned the hard way – that sometimes these are too intertwined with organisations that have terrorists ties and have just been designated here,” Rice added.
