CAPE TOWN, Dec 6: South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has revealed that coach Duncan Fletcher has a new plan to beat Australia.

Speaking from Cape Town, Kallis warned Australia to expect the unexpected in the three-Test series starting in Perth on Dec 17. “We have worked well with Duncan and he has got some new ideas to beat Australia. He got some thoughts from the 2005 Ashes but he has quite a few fresh plans for Australia this time around,” Kallis said.

As Fletcher helps devise South Africa’s blueprint to win their first Test series in Australia, it is obvious that the reverse-swing cornerstone of England’s 2005 win will not be a huge factor this summer.

Australian conditions - and the Kookaburra balls use - aren’t as conducive to reverse swing, so South Africa has been looking at other methods to dethrone Australia.

The threat posed by new fast-bowling superman Dale Steyn is obvious, but South Africa are also planning to use veteran paceman Makhaya Ntini as a specialist weapon against Australian opener Matthew Hayden, who has always found him awkward.

Towering quick Morne Morkel will also be employed to unsettle Australia’s ageing top order with some blood-and-thunder tactics.

Morkel is brilliant but reckless in much the same fashion as England’s Steve Harmison, who helped destroy Australia with 17 wickets during the 2005 series. “There will be key moments in this series and we want to take advantage of them,” Kallis said.—Agencies
