CNIC: an ordeal for women

Published December 2, 2008

SIALKOT, Dec 1: The female members of the Daska tehsil council and activists of social organisations have expressed concern over inconvenience the women have to face while obtaining computerised national identity cards from Nadra.

They have also accused the National Database and Registration Authority officials of non-cooperation which has made CNIC seekers a rolling stone.

In a written statement issued by the local councillors, they have urged the Nadra director general to take stock of inefficient service of the Daska office and expedite delivery of the CNICs. The councillors said Nadra officials had set up joint counters for male and female applicants outside the office on the congested Kutchery Road, which makes it difficult for women to stand in long queues.

In most cases, they said, the women failed to get token despite spending hours in front of the counter due to improper arrangements. And when the applicants approached the higher-ups to register their complaints, the officials rarely redressed their grievances and instead misbehaved with them, the councillors alleged. They further said the security guards outside the authority’s Daska office misbehaved with the visitors.

They have demanded separate counters for the women and elderly people besides recruitment of educated persons who could work more efficiently and properly guide the applicants coming from far-off places.
