OKARA, Nov 21: A large number of students and villagers on Friday blocked the GT Road near Akhtarabad bus stop for about three hours to protest the killing of a student and injuring of his brother seriously by a speeding bus on Thursday.
Reports said that Iqbal and his brother Zulfiqar were standing along the road when the speeding bus hit them, killing the former instantly and injuring the latter seriously. The injured was shifted to the Lahore General Hospital in a critical condition.
The protesters chanted slogans against the district administration for its failure to check the speed limit violations by bus drivers. They also damaged some vehicles.
A heavy police contingent and Elite Force jawans reached the spot and held talks with protesters which bore no fruit. Later, the police fired teargas shells and baton-charged when protesting students and villagers started throwing stones on law enforcers. After some time, the police succeeded in dispersing the enraged mob.
It is learnt that police arrested dozens of students and villagers on the charge of blocking the GT Road.
Police sources said that 150 people, including 30 nominated men, had been booked under the Anti-Terrorists Act.
ARRESTED: B-Division police claimed to have arrested drug pusher Liaquat Ijaz with one kilogramme of hashish here on Friday.
A case has been registered against the accused.
