ISLAMABAD, Nov 21: After submission of a judicial inquiry report on the thrashing of two doctors at the Federal Government Services Hospital, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar on Friday summoned a senior National Assembly official and his daughter-in-law to the court on Tuesday along with the doctors.

Secretary Health Suleman Ghani, Chief Commissioner Kamran Lashari and Inspector General Police Islamabad Asghar Raza Gardezi are also required to attend the court proceedings.

Taking suo motu notice of the incident, a three-member bench comprising the chief justice, Justice Ijazul Hassan and Justice Chaudhry Ejaz Yousaf had ordered the district and sessions judge Islamabad to conduct a judicial inquiry into the attack and submit the report in a week.

Soon after the announcement of the judicial inquiry, the Doctors Action Committee suspended its agitation that had entered into ninth day but with a warning that they would chalk out their future strategy keeping in view the situation.

In the latest move, the chief justice directed his office to fix the matter before an open court on November 25 and issue notices to deputy secretary National Assembly Tariq Khakwani, his daughter-in-law Meeran Sharif, Dr Riffat Pasha and Dr Ali Ahmed to appear before the court in person.

Earlier, the judicial inquiry into the incident was ordered by the apex court on the request of the health secretary to contain the growing protest by doctors of the twin cities.

The daughter-in-law of the National Assembly official had gone to the emergency ward of the FGSH to administer anti-rabies vaccine to her daughter. When the doctors refused to administer the vaccine, her husband along with seven other persons reached the hospital and thrashed the doctors and the hospital staff.

Initially, the IGP Islamabad had informed the court that an FIR was lodged under Sections 353, 186, 147, 149, 342 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on November 3 with the Aabpara police.

Later, the police added sections 354, 337-A(i) and 337-F(iii) but deleted section 427 from the initial FIR.

Ms Sharif had also moved an application with the SHO of Aabpara seeking registration of a cross-FIR which has not yet been registered.
