STOCKHOLM (Sweden), Nov 12: South African swimmer Cameron van der Burgh set his third world short-course record in four days at the World Cup on Tuesday.

Also, Peter Marshall regained the 100 metres backstroke record in 49.94 seconds, breaking American countryman Ryan Lochte’s time of 49.99 from the 2006 world championships. Lochte took the record from Marshall. Another American, Randall Bal, came second in 50.30 seconds.

Van der Burgh broke his own three-day-old 50 breaststroke record of 26.08 in 25.94. Vladislav Polyakov of Kazakhstan came second in 26.72.

Van der Burgh first broke the 50 breaststroke record last Saturday at the World Cup in Moscow, becoming the first African man to hold a breaststroke record.

Oleg Lisogor of Ukraine had held the record for nearly three years. Van der Burgh added the 100 breaststroke record the next day.

In Stockholm, he partly credited new starting blocks, with an extra elevated part on the back, for the new record.

“It helped me to come under 26 seconds. It feels incredible to be the first to have managed 26 seconds,” he told Swedish television.
