16 booked for holding jirga

SHIKARPUR, Nov 12: Police on Wednesday registered an FIR after suo motu action by the Supreme Court against two organisers and 14 participants of a jirga, which had ordered to give a seven-year-old girl in marriage to a 15-year-old boy to settle a dispute over karo-kari between two warring groups.

Shikarpur DPO Khadim Hussain Rind ordered police to lodge the FIR at Kot Shahoo police station after the Supreme Court ordered him to send an detailed report on the jirga.

The FIR nominates as accused jirga holders Mashi Khan Jatoi, Bajhi Khan Jatoi and 14 participants, including Jhando Jatoi, Saeen Dad Jatoi and Gajjan Jatoi.

According to reports, tribal leaders Maashi Khan Jatoi and Bajhi Khan Jatoi had convened the jirga in Lal Khan Jatoi village in the limits of Kot Shahoo police station on Sunday last week, which declared Jhando Jatoi guilty of having illicit relations with the wife of Saindad Jatoi.

The jirga ordered Gajjan Jatoi to give his seven-year-old daughter Hajul in marriage to 15-year-old Shahoo Jatoi, son of complainant Saindad Jatoi, as compensation on behalf of his brother Jhando Jatoi and also imposed Rs100,000 fine, the sources said. Later, nikah was solemnised and the minor bride was sent to her husband’s house.

No arrest has been reported so far because all men nominated by the FIR have fled their homes.
