ISLAMABAD, Nov 10: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif has vowed to move a bill to repeal the 17th Amendment if the government did not table it in accordance with the Charter of Democracy.

Talking to reporters after meeting Chinese Ambassador Luo Zhaohui at the Punjab House on Monday, Mr Sharif said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) should take the initiative, otherwise his party would be forced to do it on its own.

The resolve came just two days after Mr Sharif met President Asif Ali Zardari (on Saturday).

Referring to the meeting, the PML-N chief said they discussed the domestic situation, focussing on implementation of the Charter of Democracy and restoration of judges.

He said he had conveyed to President Zardari his party’s anger over the unfulfilled commitments.

Mr Sharif said that his party wanted to see a “genuine democracy” and not the one left behind by Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

He said he had told President Zardari that continuation of the previous government’s policies tantamounted to disrespecting the people’s mandate.

Mr Sharif said he had warned President Zardari of consequences, adding that the resolution, adopted by the parliament during the in-camera session on security issues was not implemented in letter and in spirit.

Stressing the need for doing away with Gen (retd) Musharraf’s policies, he said they had caused serious problems for the country.

Earlier, China’s Ambassador Luo Zhaohui called on Mr Sharif and discussed issues related to Pakistan-China strategic relationship.

A spokesman for the PML-N said the two sides discussed the security situation, the military operation in the NWFP and tribal areas, financial crisis being faced by Pakistan and China’s role in the region.
