ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar on Saturday took suo motu notice of the assault on two doctors at the Federal Government Services Hospital by the family members of two bureaucrats last week.

The chief justice directed the federal secretary health, chief commissioner and inspector general of police Islamabad to report the matter personally on November 10 at 2pm in the Supreme Court. In this regard, notices have also been issued to them.

Meanwhile, police amended the FIR registered against the family members of the bureaucrats by adding two more sections including a non-bailable one, sources told Dawn on Saturday.

The sources said sections 337-A and 337-F of the PPC were added to the FIR on the light of medico-legal reports. The police have also requested Additional District and Sessions Judge Nisar Baig to cancel the bail obtained by the accused on November 6 after insertion of the non-bailable section in the FIR, the sources said.

The case was registered on November 3 on the complaint of assistant executive director of FGSH. A cross-version case was also registered against the doctors on the charge of detaining the bureaucrats’ family members and stealing cash, a gold ring and cellphones.

Meanwhile, the protesting doctors reached D. Chowk to demand action against the accused on Saturday. More than 500 doctors from different hospitals and associations of the twin cities joined the rally and sit-in. The demonstration was observed to build pressure on the government to take action against the accused and put them behind bars.

On the other hand, the accused have also stepped up efforts for an out-of-court settlement with the doctors and have approached their common friends, the doctors’ action committee said.

However, the committee said the decision to forgive the accused or go for the legal battle would be taken at the next meeting schedule on Monday morning.

The committee also requested all the state-run hospitals of the twin cities to observe a two hours token strike from Monday till their demand was met. According to the committee, the request was accepted by the representatives of the hospitals.

Earlier, the doctors of FGSH and representatives of Pakistan Medical Association, Young Doctors Association, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Capital Development Authority Hospital, Fauji Foundation Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital and Benazir Bhutto Hospital assembled at the auditorium of FGSH at around 8:30am.

Later, they moved to D. Chowk at around 10:30am and reached Parade Ground at about 11.15am and staged a sit-in there for an hour. The protesters were chanting slogans and holding banners and placards inscribed with their demands.

A full day strike was also observed at the FGSH; however, patients were provided medical assistance at the emergency wards and operation theatres.
