COLOMBO, May 10: The Lankan military’s hierarchy in charge of the government-controlled regions in the northeast met representatives of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elaam (LTTE) met on Friday to discuss the running of buses from Colombo to the LTTE-held areas through a major highway, which was formally opened last month.

The meeting was described by the ceasefire monitoring mission representatives as historic, cordial and very positive.

The meeting lasted nearly an hour.

The two parties had agreed upon the basic technicalities for the flow of traffic from the south to the northeEast.

A follow-up meeting between the LTTE and the army will take place next week to determine the date of traffic resumption.

Fisheries and tourism had been looked at specifically and a proposal for the development of these two areas, handed over to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Jayarathne said.
