Vote proves Iftikhar is the CJP: Kurd

LAHORE, Oct 28: Movement for the restoration of deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other judges would continue with a new vigour, Ali Ahmad Kurd said after the announcement of unofficial results of the Supreme Court Bar Association election.

Talking to reporters, Kurd said that his victory had proved that Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was the constitutional CJP. He said the movement for his restoration would continue till the removal of Abdul Hameed Dogar from the office of the CJP and there would be no compromise.

Supreme Court Bar Association President Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said that the results “should open the eyes of those claiming that the movement of the lawyers has lost steam.” He said that he did not expect the Pakistan Peoples Party to restore the deposed judges but the lawyers would continue their movement for their restoration.

POLLING: There was a great enthusiasm among the lawyers during the polling here. Jubilant lawyers congratulated SCBA President Chaudhry Aizaz Ahsan and former president Hamid Khan on the victory of Kurd and blocked traffic on The Mall.

QAYYUM: Lawyers gave a tough time to former Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum when he arrived to cast his vote here on Tuesday.

Lawyer Tehseen Irfan accused Qayyum of misappropriating Rs100 million from the bar funds during his tenure as the SCBA president. The situation became tense when some companions of the former AG used `indecent language’ against the woman lawyer.

Qayyum left the place when the situation became more tense. He returned after some time but had to leave the premises without casting his vote as the lawyers raised slogans against him.

The official results will be announced on October 31.
