ISLAMABAD, Oct 27: A government spokesman on Monday deplored the statement of Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed alleging that the Army was on its way to break up the country to accomplish “the US agenda”.

The spokesman said institutions responsible for national security should be kept beyond “statements issued for vested interests and to gain political mileage”.

The spokesman said Qazi Sahib’s statement itself “accomplishes anti-state agenda; seeks to create a wedge between civilians and the military, and also aims to lower the morale of the security forces”.

Instead of levelling allegations, the Jamaat-i-Islami chief should try to complement the government’s efforts for resolving different conflicts through peaceful means, the official added.

“But unfortunately, out of political expediency, he has left the country at the mercy of terrorists and extremists.”

Qazi Hussain Ahmed, in a speech at a JI-sponsored religious gathering on Sunday, had alleged that the army operation in tribal areas was being carried out to pave the way for “disintegration of the country”.
