Tanneries in troubling times

Published October 28, 2008

KASUR, Oct 27: Kasur Tanneries Association activists staged a demonstration and blocked roads on Monday in protest against 16-hour unscheduled loadshedding at Niaz Nagar Chowk.

Up to 250 tannery owners attended the protest demo with banners inscribed with anti-government and anti-Wapda slogans. They blocked the roads connecting Niaz Nagar Chowk and burnt used tyres there.

Tannery owners Haji Abdul Ghuffar and Sheikh Muhammad Akram said frequent power failures had made it impossible for them to meet export orders and that many consignments had been cancelled by their foreign buyers. They added workers already facing difficulties due to skyrocketing prices, were forced to starvation because of hours-long loadshedding.—Correspondent
