LAHORE, Oct 25: Governor Salmaan Taseer on Saturday gave ‘conditional’ approval for revival of defunct divisions and subsequent posting of divisional commissioners in Punjab.

An ordinance to this effect would be issued in a couple of days, followed by a notification regarding posting of divisional commissioners in eight defunct divisions of the province, a senior Punjab government official told Dawn.

“The governor has basically barred the Punjab government from making any amendments to the Local Government Ordinance. He has signed the summary with a condition that no district government powers would be transferred to the divisional commissioners. Instead, the provincial government would transfer some of its powers to them,” he said.

The Punjab Local Government Ordinance has been included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. It cannot be amended for seven years and comes into force with effect from its inclusion in the schedule.
