LAHORE, Oct 24: Former Test captain Intikhab Alam is likely to be named interim coach of the Pakistan team for the three-match One-day International series against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi next month.

The post of coach fell vacant after former Australian Test paceman Geoff Lawson was sacked as Pakistan coach by the PCB on Friday.

Intikhab, who was manager of the 1992 World Cup-winning squad, is also a member of the PCB Governing Board.

As the new PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt had announced an interim period national selection committee headed by Saleem Jaffer, with Shoaib Mohammad and Ijaz Ahmed as members, Intikhab is also likely to hold the additional responsibility for the Abu Dhabi series.

Talking to a private TV channel recently, Intikhab had also expressed his consent to coach the national team.

Agencies add: Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad on Friday rubbished media reports on receiving any proposal to become the coach of national team, insisting he was not interested in the stint once again.

Miandad, who has been Pakistan coach for three different spells in the past, was responding to reports saying he had been offered to become the national coach during his meeting with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt on Wednesday.

“There is no truth in these reports that I am aiming to become coach once again. I have been asked to join the PCB Governing Body and I aim to do that because I am ready to serve Pakistan cricket in any capacity.

“But I am not looking for any coaching job with the national team or to become even a selector,” Miandad said.

Miandad, who has played 124 Tests and 233 One-day Internationals, said he went to meet Ijaz as a courtesy call and was asked to serve as a Governing Body member.

“I want to help Pakistan cricket move forward. But a lot of hard work needs to be done and the board system and set-up really needs to be improved and made more productive and accountable and if the new chairman wants to do this I am ready to cooperate and help in any way,” he stated.

Miandad’s visit to the PCB headquarters at the Gaddafi Stadium was his first one to the venue in four years.
