GUJRANWALA, Oct 21: Transporters and commuters on Tuesday protested inordinate delay in construction of Gujranwala-Hafizabad Road, blaming it on a lack of interest by the provincial government and elected public representatives.
Taking to the street, scores of protesters said the 50-kilometre stretch between Gujranwala and Hafizabad had been in a state of disrepair for the last one year.
The road had innumerable depressions which, they said, had made the travel an ordeal for the motorists.
They demanded that the funds (Rs800 million) allocated by the PML-Q government for dualisation of the thoroughfare should be utilised on the project.
The protesters also called for removal of encroachments by shopkeepers and commission agents of markets along the road to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
LOADSHEDDING: The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry has joined condemnation of unbridled loadshedding and deteriorating economic situation.
Speaking at a meeting here on Tuesday, GCCI President Riaz Mahmood Bajwa and other participants deplored that “extraordinary loadshedding has created a depressing state of affairs”.
They also condemned the public outrage that led to damage of a Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) office the other day.
