NEW DELHI: Two people were killed and 12 injured on Sunday after a bridge being built to extend New Delhi’s six-year-old metro system collapsed onto a bus and cars, police said.

A 150-metre (500-foot) section of the bridge came crashing down, trapping a passenger-filled bus in the eastern part of the Indian capital, police said.

“Two people are dead and 12 others are injured, three of them seriously,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesman of Delhi Metro Rail Corp, which is building the public transport system for the capital city’s 16 million residents.

Dayal blamed the accident on “metal fatigue” in a crane lifting gigantic blocks of pre-fabricated concrete.

He said a team of experts would investigate the incident, the first major accident on the railway in six years.

Metro official Vijay Anand also told reporters at the site the accident was due to a “technical failure.” Massive crowds gathered around huge metal girders that lay haphazardly on the ground, a photographer at the site said.—AFP
