ISLAMABAD, Oct 13: The Election Commission will meet on Tuesday to examine the declaration of assets and liabilities submitted by members of parliament and provincial assemblies.
Secretary of the commission Kanwar Mohammad Dilshad told Dawn on Monday that Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Qazi Mohammad Farooq would preside over the meeting which would be attended by the four members of the commission.
He said that a gazette notification on the declarations would be issued on Wednesday. Those who do submit the statements by that day would be barred from attending the legislatures till they submit the declaration and are allowed by the commission.
Although failure to submit details of assets and liabilities results in what is normally referred to as ‘suspension of membership’, the secretary said it was not the correct expression. “They are just stopped from attending the proceedings of the House.”
He said that names of such legislators would be sent to the chairman of the Senate and speakers of the national and provincial assemblies and they would not be able to attend the proceedings of the respective houses from Oct 16.
