GUJRANWALA, Oct 11: Traders on Saturday protested against the anti-encroachment squad and threw traffic out of gear on G T Road in Ghakhar Town.
Reports said National Highway Authority (NHA) had issued notices to all traders and shopkeepers on GT Road to remove sheds and billboards of their shops, but they did not comply with the directions. As a result a joint team of NHA, Ghakhar municipality and police conducted a cleanup operation and removed encroachments. During the operation, some shops were damaged on which traders blocked traffic.
However, motorway police reached there and cleared GT Road for traffic after half an hour.
ENCOUNTER: Police killed a robber during an `encounter’ and arrested his accomplice in Qila Dedar Singh on Saturday.
However, police claimed that the deceased identified as M Farooq committed suicide to avert his arrest.
Report said two robbers had set up a picket near Bhooman Batth and were looting passers-by. They stopped a couple riding a motorcycle and deprived them of cash and gold jewellery.
In the meantime, area people and police reached there and chased the fleeing robbers. During a `crossfire’, dacoit Farooq was killed while his accomplice Ijaz was arrested from paddy fields near Jodhpur village. The police recovered a stolen motorcycle and illicit arms from them.
TAX: The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the federal government to withdraw withholding tax on cash withdrawals as it was causing complications for small traders and industrialists.
Speaking at a meeting held here on Saturday chaired by chamber president Riaz Mahmood Bajwa, the participants said the government should adopt business-friendly policies to boost the national economy in order to put the country on road to progress and prosperity.
