Police trace niece of ‘karo’

KHAIRPUR, Oct 6: Police recovered late on Sunday night three-year-old Farzana, niece of Aziz Lashari who along with Ms Naheed Lashari had been declared karo-kari by a jirga, which had reportedly ordered that the woman be killed and the man pay Rs100,000 and give his niece’s hand in marriage as fine.

Agra police recovered the girl who along with Ms Naheed had been missing since the jirga had given the verdict and arrested Haji Lashari, Bakshal Lashari and Khuda Bux Lashari, who had participated in the jirga. Police had earlier recovered Ms Naheed who had been missing since the jirga’s verdict, after raids on different villages late on Saturday night.

Ms Naheed and Farzana were brought to the office of DPO and given in custody of women police. The DPO directed police officials to tighten security of Ms Naheed and Farzana and step up efforts to arrest other accused involved in the jirga.

Police have lodged an FIR against Bakhshal, Paryal, Haji, Sardar, Sadar, Qalab and Khuda Bux on charges of holding the jirga and arrested three of them.

The jirga held over a week ago near Razidero of Gambat taluka had declared Ms Naheed as kari and Aziz Lashari as karo and ordered that she be put to death and Aziz pay Rs100,000 and give his niece in marriage to one Naseer, 5.
