BAHAWALPUR, Oct 4: The Wildlife Department claimed to have arrested six people for illegal hunting in Cholistan desert on Friday.
The arrested poachers were later identified as Umar Hayat Hiraj, Aamir Ali Hiraj, Muhammed Asif, Ijaz Husain, Dilshad and Kashif. Their jeep, arms and searchlights were also confiscated.
On Saturday, they were produced before judicial magistrate Tariq Javed who sent them to jail.
protest: Parents and relatives of seven-year-old Arooj Asif who had died in the children ward of the Bahawal Victoria Hospital on Monday held a demonstration outside the casualty department on Saturday and demanded action against the doctors responsible for her death.
The demonstrators also burnt tyres and blocked traffic at the chowk for sometime.
Arooj Asif, a Thalassemia patient, was admitted to the children’s ward where she died on Monday.
After her death, the parents alleged that she had died owing to doctors’ negligence. Her relatives protested, smashed windowpanes and damaged doors of the doctors’ office in the ward.
The BVH administration reported the matter to police.
CHEQUES: Four people injured in the Hasilpur train blast, Bilal, Khuda Bakhsh, Ali Husain, Yasmeen and Sobia, who are under treatment at the Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH), were given cheques worth Rs75,000 each on behalf of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at a ceremony at BVH here on Saturday.
MNA Baleeghur Rehman, Punjab Special Education Minister Malik Iqbal Channar and DCO Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmad also handed over cheques worth Rs50,000 to three injured, Ghulam Murtaza, Farqan and Nargis, who had been discharged after treatment.
Later, cheques worth Rs300,000 were given to the families of four victims at a special ceremony held in the evening.
SNAKEBITE: A mother of eight died of snakebite near Mubarakpur, about 35 kilometres away from here.
Zainab was cutting fodder in the fields when a snake bit on her hand. She was taken to nearby basic health unit where she expired.
CHALLANS: Officials of the Punjab highway patrolling police have been delegated powers to challan vehicles on traffic rules’ violations on inter-city roads in this district.
Dawn learnt on Saturday that the decision had been taken by the government to minimise accidents on roads.
According to sources, patrolling police officials would start issuing challan tickets to drivers for overspeeding, negligence and carelessness and other violations from this week.
