GUJRANWALA, Sept 27: A special magistrate and his staffers were held hostage by shopkeepers allegedly at the behest of Qila Deedar Singh town nazim during price checking on Saturday. The police later registered a case against 90 people including the town nazim.

The regional transport authority (RTA) secretary and special magistrate for price checking, Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor, arrested a shopkeeper Shehbaz besides imposing fine on three others, Baber, Ramzan and Rizwan Ahmad, on overcharging and not displaying rate lists.

In the meantime, 100 or so shopkeepers led by Town Nazim Tariq Javed Butt gathered there and held the magistrate along with his staffers hostage. The shopkeepers also threw traffic out of gear on Hafizabad Road for one hour.

The police rushed to the scene and rescued the magistrate. The police registered a case against the shopkeepers and started investigations.

RELEASED: The district and sessions judge on Saturday released 39 prisoners involved in petty offences from Central Jail on Saturday.

District and Sessions Judge Iftikhar Hussain Shah visited the jail along with his colleagues and senior officers of the district administration.

He also checked various barracks, hospital and kitchen and directed jail authorities to provide better facilities to prisoners in accordance with the jail manual.

FAINTED: Eight members of a family, including women and children, were fainted after consuming contaminated meal at Sehr timings near Sialkot Bypass on Saturday.

Muhammad Aslam, his wife Sardaran Bibi, 30-year-old Ramzan, 24-year-old Parveen, 35-year-old Razia, 22-year-old Shumaila, eight-year-old Rizwan, seven-year-old Qaiser and three-year-old Robina were taken to DHQ Hospital where they are stated to be in critical condition.

CONVICTED: A sessions court judge gave death sentence to two brothers while acquitted their sister by extending benefit of doubt in a murder case here on Saturday.

Rafiq, Akram and Sakina Bibi were accused of killing Iqbal over property dispute in Kamoke Sadar police precincts two years ago. Rafiq and Akram were convicted while Sakina was acquitted.

CASE: Additional Sessions Judge Raja Arshad Mehmood directed the Civil Lines police to register a case against two SHOs for not submitting record in court on time. The court had issued notices to Sadar and Ferozewala SHOs to produce record of cases in court but they failed to do so. The police registered case.
